European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
